Abyssal Escape Abilities
All 14 survivor abilities we've confirmed, what each one does, and how patches have changed it. The developer announced 13 for launch on October 6, and Metallic Charge was added on October 13 and shipped with the game. Abilities are one half of your survivor. The other half is your vessel's look, covered in the survivors guide. Balance details come from the developer's changelog in the official Discord. Numbers from players are labeled as player reports.
Rules every survivor should know
- In the ability menu, the icon shows the type: stars mean a stun, a cross means a heal, a gear means miscellaneous, and a swipe means movement.
- You equip two abilities. New players start with Weak Punch and Healing Box. Everything else is bought with rings.
- Equipping two stun abilities halves the stun duration of both.
- Killers build up stun resistance: the more stuns stack on them, the shorter each one gets.
- Running out of stamina for any reason disables your abilities and stamina regeneration for 3.5 seconds.
- Stamina regenerates while running, just more slowly than when walking.
All survivor abilities
| Ability | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Weak PunchStarter | Stun | A close-range punch that stuns the killer. One of the two abilities every new player starts with. |
| Healing BoxStarter | Heal | Places a box that heals whoever picks it up. Picking it up while downed revives you. |
| Heal Prayer | Heal | A channelled heal. You're locked in place while it runs. |
| Fireball | Ranged stun | A projectile that stuns the killer. |
| Arm Cannon | Ranged stun | Fires a blast that explodes and stuns the killer. |
| Pistol Shot | Ranged | A gun with limited ammo that reloads over time. Good for hitting the killer from long range. |
| Metallic Charge | Stun | Charge up, then fly forward and stun the killer. You can grab the killer and keep flying, and slamming into a wall stuns them for longer but costs you 20 HP (it can't kill you). You have i-frames while charging. |
| Phantom Reflex | Defense | A parry. Time it on a killer hit to cancel the damage. Land three in a row and you stun the killer and get a speed boost. |
| Slide | Mobility | A quick slide for distance. |
| Heroic Boost | Mobility | A burst of speed that can also pick up and carry a teammate. |
| Camouflage | Stealth | Blend into your surroundings so the killer has a harder time spotting you. |
| Psychic Float | Mobility | Lowers your gravity so you float. |
| Flashbang | Utility | Blinds the killer's screen. |
| Awareness | Passive | A passive that was one of the two free abilities in the pre-release playtest. Players running it report getting frequent speed buffs in big lobbies. |
Players also mention a few more abilities, such as a dodge move and a Peelout-style dash. We'll add them once we've confirmed their names and effects.
Weak Punch
StunStarterA close-range punch that stuns the killer. One of the two abilities every new player starts with.
Patch changes
- Costs 25 stamina (pre-release patch).
Player reports: Players report a stun of roughly 2 to 4 seconds and about a 17-second cooldown after it lands. It's reliable, but on its own it doesn't buy much distance.
Healing Box
HealStarterPlaces a box that heals whoever picks it up. Picking it up while downed revives you.
Patch changes
- v1.17: heal cut from 20% to 10%, and self-heal from 10% to 5%.
- Pre-release: picking it up while downed now revives you; hitbox fixed.
Player reports: At launch it was the most complained-about ability, with players placing boxes everywhere. After the v1.17 nerf it's much weaker.
Heal Prayer
HealA channelled heal. You're locked in place while it runs.
Patch changes
- v1.17: consumes stamina faster.
- Pre-release: healing rate cut from 1 HP per 0.1 s to 1 HP per 0.25 s.
Player reports: One player measured about 17 HP per use with a long cooldown (around a minute).
Fireball
Ranged stunA projectile that stuns the killer.
Patch changes
- v1.20: now aims at your mouse, slows the killer and travels faster.
- Costs 30 stamina (pre-release patch).
Player reports: A favorite stun with a short cooldown. Players say it stuns about as long as Weak Punch, and since v1.20 it slows the killer as well.
Arm Cannon
Ranged stunFires a blast that explodes and stuns the killer.
Patch changes
- Pre-release: buffed, blast hitbox fixed, and it can no longer be fired twice in one use.
Pistol Shot
RangedA gun with limited ammo that reloads over time. Good for hitting the killer from long range.
Patch changes
- Pre-release: ammo takes 2x longer to reload.
Player reports: Players use it to pester the killer at range and to point out the real X during someone else's Peekaboo.
Metallic Charge
StunCharge up, then fly forward and stun the killer. You can grab the killer and keep flying, and slamming into a wall stuns them for longer but costs you 20 HP (it can't kill you). You have i-frames while charging.
Patch changes
- v1.17 and v1.21: several bug fixes.
- Launch day: made much less slippery (this confirms it shipped in the release build after the October 14 preview).
- Pre-release: added on October 13 (v0.0110, “may be disabled on release if the testers deem it unbalanced”), then tuned: only drains stamina while charging, i-frames while charging.
Player reports: Fun but costly. One player found the 20 HP self-damage hard to justify, because the heals can't easily make it back.
Phantom Reflex
DefenseA parry. Time it on a killer hit to cancel the damage. Land three in a row and you stun the killer and get a speed boost.
Patch changes
- v1.18: now stops your run.
- Pre-release: the speed boost only happens after 3 back-to-back counters.
Player reports: Players report a long cooldown (around 30 seconds) if you miss and a short one (3 to 4 seconds) if you land it. Some killer moves go straight through it.
Slide
MobilityA quick slide for distance.
Patch changes
- v1.20: longer cooldown but less endlag.
- Pre-release: buffed.
Player reports: Reviewers preferred it to Heroic Boost for escaping because it doesn't drain all your stamina.
Heroic Boost
MobilityA burst of speed that can also pick up and carry a teammate.
Patch changes
- v1.17: fixed an infinite-boost bug.
- Pre-release: bigger carry hitbox; can't carry people who are mid-move or in a kill animation.
Player reports: Heavy on stamina. Several players got stuck in the ground or a wall while using it at launch.
Camouflage
StealthBlend into your surroundings so the killer has a harder time spotting you.
Patch changes
- v1.19: longer cooldown.
- Pre-release: higher stamina cost.
Player reports: Often paired with Flashbang for a blind-then-vanish escape.
Psychic Float
MobilityLowers your gravity so you float.
Patch changes
- Pre-release: costs 20% more stamina; visuals revamped.
Player reports: One player wished it gave real hover or flight instead of lowered gravity.
Flashbang
UtilityBlinds the killer's screen.
Patch changes
- Pre-release: bug fix. Photosensitive mode makes flashbangs dark instead of bright.
Awareness
PassiveA passive that was one of the two free abilities in the pre-release playtest. Players running it report getting frequent speed buffs in big lobbies.
Player reports: One player called it close to “immortal” in big lobbies but weak in small ones.
Builds players are running
| Build | Abilities | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The staller | Weak Punch + Phantom Reflex | Parry hits and punch your way out. A player using it reported stalling a killer for 1:30 or more. Hard to master. |
| Stun + parry | Fireball + Phantom Reflex | Fireball is a short-cooldown ranged stun that also slows the killer since v1.20. Reflex covers you when the killer gets close. One player got 11 stuns in a match with Fireball. |
| The medic | Healing Box + Heal Prayer | Full support for big lobbies. Healing Box was cut to 10% in v1.17, so it's weaker than at launch. Heal behind cover. |
| Now you see me | Flashbang + Camouflage | Blind the killer, then disappear. A popular escape build. |
| Ranged pressure | Pistol Shot + Fireball | Pester the killer from range and help find the real X during someone else's Peekaboo. Two ranged picks. Note that Fireball counts as a stun. |
Killer abilities
Each killer has three abilities and a basic attack (M1), which does 35 damage since v1.24. Their full movesets by phase are on the killer pages:
- The Deity (X): Hide and Seek, Ring Trap, Peekaboo
- No More Innocence: Screen Transportation, Deceit, Hallucination
- Fleetway Super Sonic: Flight, Chaos Laser, Grab
- 2017X: Top Speed, Spin Dash, Obsession
- Furnace: Charge Heat, Heat Radar (passive), Thruster Flight (passive), Claw Slash, Scorched Earth
FAQ
What are the starter abilities in Abyssal Escape?
Weak Punch and Healing Box. Every other ability is bought with rings, which you earn from matches.
What is the best survivor ability?
Right now, Fireball is the safest stun pick because of its short cooldown and the v1.20 buff, which added mouse aim and a slow on the killer. Phantom Reflex has the highest ceiling for players who can time parries. Healing Box was strong at launch but was nerfed in v1.17.
Can you use two stun abilities?
You can, but both stuns are halved. Pair one stun with a heal, a mobility move or Phantom Reflex instead.
Why can't I use my abilities?
You may be out of stamina. Running out disables abilities and stamina regeneration for 3.5 seconds. At launch, console and some mobile players also had a bug where abilities didn't work, which later patches tried to fix.
